Star Trek Beyond

We went to a matinee of Star Trek today.

I enjoyed it, though not as much as I hoped. Part of my problem stemmed from the shooting style and the fact that all the swaying perspectives made me dizzy. I'm usually okay with experimental shooting styles, but the space station with the angled gravitational forces messed with my head.

Also, it was very bittersweet knowing Nimoy and Yelchin aren't with us any longer. I loved the picture of the old crew in Spock's effects.

It was nice to see the old themes come out to play without being too heavy about it. If ever there was a time for unity and peace, it's now.

And I'd completely forgotten Idris Elba was in it. It wasn't until halfway through that I recognized his voice and remembered. Of course, his role felt pretty thin. It took too long to get more answers about his motivation so he seemed like a cookie cutter bad guy for most of the movie. I can't empathize for the guy's plight if I don't know what it is, and shoehorning it into the last fifteen minutes of the movie doesn't work.
