At the movies

Let's get back into the swing of things by talking about the two new movies I saw this week, shall we?

On Tuesday, the family and I went and saw "The Martian." I'm the only one of us who didn't read the book before going, but I was more than on the bandwagon when I saw the trailers. I loved it. I did think it was a teensy bit too long, but frankly, that's a minor quibble. I'm not usually a big fan of Matt Damon, but this worked for me on a lot of levels. It was funny and suspenseful, but when I expected to walk out of the theater listening to my family exclaim how wonderful it was, I was surprised to have to listen to them quibbling about the differences in the book. This is *my* family, who have long been conditioned to understanding that books and movies are two different beasts and to treat them differently. They all wanted more of the book in the movie, but at least I got them to admit it was still a solid movie. Now I have to go read the book.

Then today, Alicia and I went to a matinee of "Hotel Transylvania 2." It's got the same frenetic energy of the first one, though not quite the same charm. Still, it was fun, and I'm going to enjoy spending time with Alicia for as long as I can, especially when she's willing to hang out with her boring mom, lol.
