Did anybody watch Empire last night? I recorded and watched it over lunch today, but I'll admit, my biggest reason to do so was because I went to college and got to work with the guy who played Bunkie, Antoine McKay. He was the sweetest, gentlest, most incredibly talented guy back then, and I had a bit of a crush on him, I'll admit. He's had a good career since then, working for Second City quite a bit, getting bit parts here and there, teaching improv, and he's been posting about Empire on Facebook for a few months now. So of course, I had to watch.

Of course, it helps that it's got Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson. They're amazing.

Well. I'm not sure, I'll admit. It's a soap opera set in hip hop, there's no argument there, so it's supposed to be melodramatic and over the top, but I can't say I was that drawn in by any of the three sons as performers. Well, except for the scene where the two younger ones work on the song together. Howard and Henson were great with what they got, but I'm going to need more time to decide if the broad strokes of their characters is enough to suck me in and care.

On the plus side, I had my heart in my throat at the flashback scene of Howard stuffing his gay son in the trashcan. And Howard and Henson have fantastic chemistry. They're going to be fun to watch.

So I'll still watch even though Antoine got killed off. Give it another episode or two to decide whether or not I care.
