Visual art, most definitely. I'm not an artist, and I'm incredibly visually oriented so it's VERY easy to trigger bunnies this way. Ridiculously easy. I mean, didn't we all do this as kids? See a picture and make up stories about what was happening in it, or what had happened, or what was to come? I used to imagine getting sucked into pictures all the time (anybody who knew me before I started writing fanfic would not have been surprised by Rhapsody AT ALL, lol). That's one reason why I have such a hard time resisting those reverse art-athons where you get to pick a banner or wallpaper or something and write something based on it.
Other stories, that's more gray. I do my best to turn off the what if part of my brain when I read because I know what it's like to have your stories and ideas stolen from you. However, it does happen occasionally, but I rarely, rarely act on them. There is one very specific time I did, though, and I was upfront when I started posting the story. When I read elsaf's A Cricket in California, I fell in love with the idea of a Buffy/William story. It gnawed at me a long time, because I adored William so much in Elsa's work. I finally came up with the idea for Legions of True Hearts and away it went. I made sure to credit her when I started posting, too, because even though our stories have almost nothing in common except William, it was the whole reason I bunnied on it in the first place. Plus, Elsa's is a wonderful story. I wanted more people to read it. :)
