Fic meme, Day Five

Day 5 –If you have ever had a character try to push their way into a story, whether your "muse" or not, what did you do about it?

Maybe I should have read forward on the questions. I would've combined this with yesterday, lol.

I can only think of one specific time this happened, and it wasn't with a 'verse character. All my Buffy fic was heavily outlined ahead of time, and I rarely veered off the course, which means a tight control of the characters. Hence, no pushing.

However...my second story ever, Rhapsody in Oil, had two outlines. The reason for that was because of Gino. For those who don't remember who he is or haven't read the story, Gino was the OC love interest I had for Willow in it, a gentle giant who wasn't very bright and worked with Spike at the doors of the club. In my original outline, Gino was a throwaway OC. He was there strictly for color and exposition for Spike.

Then Willow went through the painting. And when Gino rescued her from the guy who pinched her ass, he made it well and clear he had a thing for her.

That wasn't in the cards. It had never been in the cards. He was meant to get her off the floor so I could get more exposition out with her and Buffy. But after I got out of his POV, I started thinking. I liked Gino a lot at that point. I liked Willow. I already knew I liked OCs because of Cortina in The Hunt, so I thought...why not?

I tossed my outline and redid it with Gino as a major player. Now, I can't even imagine the story any other way, and Gino remains one of my favorite OCs ever.

It hasn't happened with Merlin yet. I'm not sure it will because I'm better about controlling the stories. But who knows?
