This week, I read a children's book called The Giver by Lois Lowry. It came out after my own childhood, but it was recommended to me at some point as worth it so I picked it up. It is...thought-provoking to say the least. And I was left wondering afterward if I thought Alicia was mature enough yet to handle all the themes in it, or to understand them. Recommendations are for 11 and up. I decided yes, but when I gave her the book, I told her I'd like to discuss it afterward, if she was so inclined. She was curious and wanted to know why, but I didn't want to spoil her and said, "Just read the book. Then tell me when you're done how you feel."
Has anyone out there read it? What are your thoughts? Alicia's a very mature 10, and I'm more than all right with her being exposed to these themes. I was reading elsewhere of some parents who don't think it's appropriate for her age group at all, but their objections sounded far too conservative and protective to me.
