Today's the day to get angry, I guess

I guess today is just my day of frustration with ignorance.

Last week, a Florida judge ruled that a couple fostering a 1-year-old boy who was a relation to one of the pair could permanently adopt the child, based on testimony from the family, a child psychologist, the boy's preschool administrator, a social worker and the state-appointed Guardian ad Litem. Good news, right? Not to everyone. Because the couple in question was a lesbian couple, and Florida extremists are now resorting to blatant lies in order to perpetuate ignorance and fear.

In response to the ruling, they called it "arrogant judicial activism" and sent a message out to all its members, along with what they said was a photograph of the couple. Except it wasn't. The couple look like your everyday middle-class women, while the photograph depicted a stereotype meant to upset their homophobic membership. You can see the article and pictures here.

Honestly, this kind of response just leaves me flabbergasted. It goes hand in hand with the outright lies that occurred here in California during the last elections with Prop 8, and makes me truly sad that there are people out there who will manipulate whatever they have to, to further an agenda that needs to abolished. In this case, they would rather this child go back into an overloaded system and likely get lost, than spend a lifetime with a couple who loves them, who everybody from the boy's family to objective third-party professionals agree is the best and most positive option for the child. Just because the couple in question is gay.

Love and decency is not about gender. If you don't agree with what two adults do in the privacy of their own relationship and home, that's fine, but it is not fine to try and inflict your own principles and morals onto other people, especially through lies and ignorance. These are real people with lives extremists like that are trying to destroy, all in some kind of fear of what they do not understand. I will never understand how anyone can condone this kind of behavior.
