Alicia and Alex have been fighting colds, which sucks more for Alicia as she is having a sleepover this weekend with her two best friends in lieu of a birthday party. The girls are coming over in the afternoon, then we're going out to Benihana's for dinner (Alicia's pick), then home to decorate cupcakes and slumber party. Alicia's birthday is actually next week, but we picked doing something this weekend because she specifically wanted Benihana's and I knew trying to book something for Valentines Day weekend would be a nightmare.
I do have something to share. A video of a Nigerian writer called Chimamanda Adichie. She talks about the dangers of "the single story," and though I found it in regards to all the discussion that's been going on around the web about the appropriation of minority cultures, I think what she has to say stretches further than that. It's not just about how we present stories. It's about how we perceive people, and the danger in accepting stereotypes. I *highly* recommend watching it. It's 19 minutes long, but she's funny, and smart, and most importantly, what she has to say is important.
And now I'm off to bed, because I just can't keep my eyes open any longer.
