American Idol, the top 8

Michael Johns – My first thought was that this was the perfect song for her. My second was, “This is an inspirational song?” Wasn’t quite what I expected to hear, but Michael totally nailed this. Of course, it’s totally slaughtered when it’s done in 90 seconds, but I loved this. He even got all the falsetto stuff right.

Syesha Mercado – Is it ever a good idea to sing a song by a previous Idol winner? I don’t think so. I think her song choice is going to screw Syesha this week. The audience already finds it hard to remember her when she does amazing. But she’s not Fantasia. Fantasia brought an earthy grit to this song that Syesha lacks. She’s just too polished to pull it off.

Jason Castro – Oh, Jason. I love you. I do. But…a ukulele? I didn’t like the start. I liked the end, but I wasn’t anywhere near blown away by it as the judges were. Their response just leaves me flummoxed.

Kristy Lee Cook – I don’t know this song, though my country knowledge isn’t the best. Kristy sounded good, but…I’m so bored with her by now. Can she be gone, please?

David Cook – I like David, but the performance seemed a little too preachy for me, even for it being an inspirational week. Like the hand in the camera at the end. Not my favorite of his.

Carly Smithson – Carly gave me goosebumps tonight. She’s got the vocals to actually sing Queen, and the passion to get behind songs like this. Loved her.

David Archuleta – He sounded breathier than usual. And no matter what he did, I kept hearing Robbie Williams and wishing it was him singing instead of David. Not a very good sign, though the fact that I know this song because it’s absolutely HUGE in the UK maybe play into that. Why was Randy so excited about it?

Brooke White – I didn’t know this was a Carole King song first. I wonder if the fact that I absolutely love James Taylor’s version affected my enjoyment of this. Brooke was pleasant enough, I guess, though there were a few wavery notes. It just bored me.

FAVORITE TWO - Carly Smithson and Michael Johns
BOTTOM TWO - David Cook and Syesha Mercado

Though I don't think David is going anywhere. I think bottom 3 will be Syesha, Carly, and Kristy.
