Any Charlaine Harris readers out there?

So a while ago, I finally picked up the first of the Sookie Stackhouse books. It took me forever to get through the first 3/4's of it. I kept waiting for the charm and humor I'd heard so much about kick in. Then, for some inexplicable reason, I zipped through the last quarter. I decided when I finished it I wouldn't continue on with the series, but the news about the show has got me thinking about it, and now I'm mildly curious about book 2.

If you're reading them, do they get better? Is it just a slow start? I find Bill dull as dishwater, so does Sam get more page time?
