Review for The Canvas of Her Skin

I don't usually talk about the reviews for my original work here too much, mostly because I know how arbitrary they are. But I got my first review for the novella I wrote that came out 3 weeks ago today and it has me bouncing off the walls. Mostly because I know as a simple contemporary that's very light on plot, it probably wouldn't have a big readership.

Title: The Canvas of Her Skin
Author: Vivien Dean

Mark Douglas just wants to paint his landscapes in peace. Although he had always painted, after his girlfriend Amy dumped him two years ago, Mark chose to stick with subjects that couldn't hurt him. Unhappily, Mark agrees to take a life studies course in order to bring more warmth to his work, as his agent insisted. Tallulah Weaver, the life studies model, is a beautiful, sprite-like woman who intrigues and inspires Mark right from the beginning. He is captivated by her eyes and his painting reflects that.

WOW! I repeat, WOW! The Canvas of Her Skin is the most beautiful story that I have read in quite some time. Ms. Dean knows her characters so very well, and writes them so honestly, that I felt that they could be neighbors of mine. I would love to know them. Tallulah and Mark's sexual encounters were so exciting to me that they took my breath away and encouraged me to reread the book. The best part of their sex was Ms. Dean's delicate touch. She writes graphically, but still with a light touch that allows the reader to float into and love along with the characters. Just magnificent! The only secondary character of any importance is Mark's agent, who fulfills her purpose of moving the plot along. Mark is somewhat self-centered until he meets Tallulah, who begins to show him more of the joy in life. Tallulah, herself, is somewhat shy, even though she poses in the nude as a second job. These two diffident characters help to bring each other “out” into the real world. Both Mark and Tallulah take from and give to each other, which helps to make each other whole. I will re-read The Canvas of Her Skin often. This is the first book of Ms. Dean's which I have ever read and what a wonderful author to read!

So, yeah, that's my good news of the day. I'm pleased as punch. Oh, and the next Beg chapter is halfway done. It'll be finished by the end of the day and sent off to sadbhyl for beta-ing. Life is very good today. :)
