Last Friday, Craig found out that his company was downsizing his half of the company by 75%. The company is basically in 2 parts, a service side that's so profitable it's sickening, and the software side that has *never* been profitable. Part of that problem is that the sales department is too good, so they kept getting new clients that couldn't end up being satisfied, and then resources got sucked away from older clients who then got all pissy. Understandably so. Craig's been burning the candle at both ends, trying to keep everybody happy and trying to manage the meager resources he has to meet the clients' demands.
Well, the company president finally decided enough was enough. They have decided to let go all of the clients they've been negotiating with and only work with the 6 or 7 who still have contracts. They're also not going to be adding any new clients. That means the entire sales and marketing teams were let go, all but one of the production managers, and all but a handful of the software guys.
We were very nervous in the beginning about Craig's position in the company, but after he met with the president, it's basically come down to the fact that Craig will be the last person in his department out the door. They need him, and as long as they have a client with a contract, Craig has a job. Ideally, cutting all the new clients will give Craig and his new team the means to finally satisfy the existing client base. That's the way Craig is looking at it, and if that happens, his division will be profitable.
So...we've been in flux about what this means for our future for a few days now. As of today, nothing will be noticeably changing. Craig has some added bonuses for the new structure change, as well as the boon of a lot less travel. We were both mildly annoyed because the month he spent in India is now wasted in a lot of ways since 2/3's of them are now gone. But we're taking things one day at a time. If we have to make a drastic change at some point, we will. And we'll do the best we can. It's what we do. :)
