Fic meme, Day Thirteen

Day 13 – Do you prefer canon or fanon when you write? Has writing fanfic for a fandom changed the way you see some or even all of the original source material?

Hm, can I say both? I like to start with canon and springboard from there, which ultimately turns into fanon. And I don't see how writing *can't* change the way you view the source material. It's not just learning to appreciate episodes or characters you might not have normally liked or cared for. It's about giving characters a deeper analysis in an attempt to effectively portray motivations to make them more real in your story. When you go back and rewatch, that new thinking shades how you're watching. And it's not just writing it. Reading it does the same. How many of us have read a story that blew us away, maybe with a pairing you don't normally read or a character you've never really thought about it, then gone back and watched the show? That character (or characters) seem different. There's no getting around that.
