Fanfic Author Appreciation Week - Day Two

March 6 through March 13

Post to your LJ each day at least one of your favorite fanfic authors and why you love them, their work, and why they need more appreciation.

DAY TWO

I stumbled onto fanfic while I was waiting for S6 to start. I came into Buffy late - the first episode I saw was "The Gift" - and then devoured all there was to see via reruns on Sky One and videos. And I *still* had to wait 4 months for S6 to start in the UK. I got online primarily because I was curious about spoilers from the US and the rest is pretty much history. Since Spike, and the potential for Spuffy, was my primary driving force at the time, it took very little time to discover fanfic. One of the first authors that completely blew me out of the water was cousinjean.

I didn't even know people had their own websites for this. I was reading everything at ffnet because I didn't know better, and I stumbled across a story called "Future Imperfect." I devoured it. I cried. I shouted, "No!" at my computer screen at a plot twist in the last chapter, and then sighed happily at the end. I then proceeded to go read everything of hers that I could find.

There's a deceptive simplicity to cousinjean's writing. It's storytelling that's honest, without artifice, and true to its characters. She makes it look effortless, but once you attempt to emulate her, you realize just how much she actually accomplishes. She makes the rest of us better, by giving us something to aspire to.

"Future Imperfect" and "Perfect World" remain 2 of my favorite stories by her, but you can find all her work here. She's also at the heart of Dancing Lessons, a treasure trove that every Spuffy should read. Go give her a go, if you haven't. I promise you won't be disappointed.

(no subject)

I have been trying for the past two hours to say thank you to the various people who mentioned me today as part of Fanfic Author Appreciation week, and I've gotten stupid read only errors each and every single time I've tried. So pardon me for responding this way, but I'm so frickin' frustrated with LJ right now, that it's the only it'll happen at all.

I just want to say THANK YOU!!!! to everyone for all their kind and supportive words. Writing can often place you in a bubble---and I'm notorious for being bubble-ized more so than other authors---so I just want you to know how MUCH I appreciate each and every single one of you. jennice, show up in Sacramento, and I promise not to be shy. musing_mia, you were a big part on why I started posting my fic in the first place. Your early support gave me the confidence I needed to keep going. kallysten, you inspire me to keep trying harder. I only wish I could get Buffy as well as you do. And there are others, but my head is splitting and I'm about to throw my laptop out the window from the frustration of it all, so please just know that I'm always grateful.

*squishes all of you*
